The View From Mars
Chrismas 1968 — men were on the moon. The crew of Apollo 8 pointed their camera home and took a photograph, now know as Earthrise, that forever changed the way we view our planet and our place in the universe.
That image was taken almost forty years ago. And today, in 2008, the view we have of our planet and our relationship to it is even more critical then it was in 1968.
And today we have a new view.
This image of the Earth and the Moon, released today, was taken on October 3, 2007, by the High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (HiRISE) camera which is strapped to the side of the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter. The orbiter, white not nearly as adorable as the can-do, wonder-twins, Spirit and Opportunity, has a much better view of Earth which, at the time of this photo, was a meager 88 million miles away.
What does this image mean to us?
For me this image has an anxious ambivalence, particularly when viewed through the lens of climate change.
Here we see how close the moon is, yet we know it’s still very far, reminding us how poor our sense of scale is. Climate change is challenge on a scale never confronted by humans. We have trouble understanding how human scale activity can be the problem or the solution. Climate change is a huge and complex problem, but perhaps it has simple solutions. Perhaps the solutions are near perhaps they are far. It makes me wonder how of sense of scale will shift when we face these problems and perhaps fail to overcome them.
If find it also very fitting that at a time when we are coming to new terms with Earth we see an image of it from the vantage of another planet, Mars, our nearest neighbor, our solar sibling.
Mars, to me, represents two dichotomous results of climate change. In the worst case Mars is our future: a planet where water once flowed and now trickles. But in the best, we are Mars’ future: armed with the technology and the wisdom gained by saving our own planet we might begin to revive Mars and bring our sibling back to life.
